Common Mistakes On Managing Renovation Projects

A home remodeling or renovation project is not as simple as it may sound. Renovating a building is not simply all about how it will look or function, but most significantly you have to deal with what type of materials are utilized during the renovation, how are you going to work with your suppliers and contractors, etc. These of course will be covered by the person who will manage the project. Thus before a renovation project starts, one of the most essential decisions to be made is who will manage the project.

You can either employ a professional who will do the work or alternatively, you can handle the project yourself. If you opt to manage the work yourself, make sure that you have sufficient experience to deal with this. According to Gail La Grouw, the following are some common mistakes done by owners who have decided to take on the role of managing the renovation project themselves,

1. Inadequate Planning

Producing a good plan is a critical part of your role as a project manager. The success of the project mostly depend on this. Your plan must include as much detail as possible. You have to regard planning for contingencies as well.

2. Poor Materials Management

Purchasing of the appropriate materials at the right time is a large job during renovation. Think about this task properly, as it can be the reason of delay to your schedule. You can also incur additional cost if you do not have your materials at the right time.

3. Poor Record Keeping

Lodge everything particularly matters that have to do with funds. Record keeping must be done everyday. You surely will overlook something in your list if you do it in an inconsistent way. Record keeping will also let you know precisely where you are in terms of time and dollars against the plan specification.

4. Not Managing The Work Site

Most subcontractors are seeking to reduce cost by disregarding a number of regulations and workplace safety items. This is a bad thing of course. Make sure that there is a proper insurance for their area of work.

5. Poor Communication

As home owners are not that knowledgeable with terms being used for renovation, miscommunication can happen along the way. Make sure that when you do not understand things, clear it up, but never loose your authority in front of your contractors of course.

6. Poor Change Management Control

All changes made during the renovation process must be documented and sign off.

7. Not Keeping Check of the Budget

Watch your budget, as most projects will overrun the initial estimate, make sure to add some percentage of your budget for your contingency plans.

There are chairs that have spacious and ventilated back rests and some others are designed to be portable.

Chairs have been around since the beginning of civilization and the basic concept of sitting on a raised platform can be seen in just about every civilization. But what is interesting is that almost all of them treated the chair with the same attitude that is something that needs to be respected and feared, because it represented power and authority. We still remnants of that in our daily vocabulary, with words like, chairman and chairperson.

As far as Europe goes it was not until the renaissance that the chair slowly became a common and acceptable item for most people. The attitude began to change and the idea was that if you could afford one you could buy and own one. With that attitude change the chair slowly became a widely used and accepted piece of furniture.

Of course nowadays the chair is seen and used every where to the point that we don’t even notice them, unless of course they are made to look different than other more ordinary chairs. Steps To Build Your Own Electrical Grounding System

Most households nowadays are wired in such a way that the grounding system forms an integral part of the electrical framework. A green-colored wire takes the errant electrical charges from the circuits and deposits them in the ground. This ground wire runs throughout the electrical setup of your home.

All the circuits and the outlets of the home ensure complete protection due to the grounding system. In case of detached or isolated homes, the grounding system is either connected to the main power substation or a local transformer.

Before you start to build a new grounding system to protect yourself against the errant electrical charges of a particular electronic/electrical device, understand the general working of a grounding system well.

Though most of the modern electrical setups are provided with efficient grounding systems, individual grounding systems need to be installed for certain electronic devices such as high-frequency welders, radio frequency apparatus etc. Such a grounding system handles the static electrical charges and fluctuations of the devices and protect us from hazardous situations.

In order to setup a grounding system, you will need a ground rod (copper), a hammer, an anti-corrosion compound, appropriate screwdrivers, pliers, copper wire, a connector (to connect the ground rod to the wires) and a ground plate (copper).

Start off the campaign by locating the place to setup your new grounding system. It should be outside your home and in vicinity of an already established electrical grounding system. Insert the rod into the ground and hammer it well. Make sure that a good portion (about 6 inches) of the rod lies above the ground in order to connect the rod to the connector. Clean off the top of the rod such that a shiny copper color appears on the rod. Apply an anti-corrosion compound on the cleaned part to build up a conductor path. Attach the connector to the rod with the help of an appropriate-sized screwdriver and tighten the fixture well.

Grab the roll of solid copper wire and tie the wire to the connector installed. Take the wire to the access point of the concerned electronic/electrical component and make the connection to an already constituted grounding system. In order to provide a common distribution point to your new grounding system, place a copper plate on the access point.

Keep the supervision of an expert in tact throughout the length of the project and derive useful suggestions from him whenever needed.

Explore Energy Saving Strategies

Do you ever look at the utility bill envelope in your mail and dread opening it? This can be one of the largest elements of our household budget and one which causes the most amount of pain. We always swear that we are going to look for energy-saving strategies for next time.

Energy-saving strategies run the gamut between relatively cheap and very expensive. A homeowner may not be in a position to consider a capital intensive project, such as putting energy efficient windows in, but will always be looking at ways to reduce the utility pain.

When those hot summer days roll around, your air conditioning system seems to run nonstop. In modern life we are so used to having a cold interior during the summer, but it is a very expensive luxury. Did you know that if you install a relatively simple dehumidifier in your main rooms that this will significantly improve your air-conditioner’s efficiency? Less humidity in the home means that you will be able to turn up the thermostat a degree or two and still feel comfortable.

You may think that a simple light bulb will not represent too much of a cost and this may be true in certain respects, but one of your energy-saving strategies should be to outfit the lights in your most trafficked rooms with motion sensors. In this way, they will turn on and off without you thinking about it and over a period of time this will represent a very significant saving.

If you fit draft stoppers in any places where you suspect you have a problem, you can eliminate those pesky drafts and also make sure that the air inside the home remains unmodified. After all, you have spent enough money to get the temperature to where you like it and it makes no sense to waste it.

Recent government legislation now enables you to claim tax credits if you are in the mood to undertake a significant capital project as one of your energy-saving strategies. This should enable you to save on the cost of energy efficient windows and see an overall reduction in your bills over time.

If you have ever been disturbed when you are watching TV or a favorite movie by a pesky draft and wonder where it is coming from, then you should take time to do some detective work. Look around all windows and entryways and treat problem areas with a window or door draft stopper. As these are made from polypropylene and filled with ground corn cob, they are great insulators and last a long time.

Don’t think about taking on major energy-saving strategies until you have fixed the simple solutions first. If you have any drafts in your home these need to be addressed to start off with, lights which are burning for no reason need to be turned off and then other options investigated.
