Toast Lovers
Toasts are my addiction. I am not alone in this addiction, however, since over 88% percent of the homes in America own a toaster with 75 million people enjoying toast every day. The English called it “Tost” and they have a long history and passion for toasts. . The toast in the Middle ages was created by putting bread over an open fire or above a hot stone. The toast did not fragment that is why it was used to absorb liquids such as stew or soup. The pieces of toasted bread was actually called ‘sops’. And more often than not was topped with such delicious things as honey, cinnamon, ginger, sugar or raisins. The first toast topped with cinnamon paste, sugar and wine was made around the 17th century. It is certainly my husband’s favorite, minus the wine! The English brought that tradition with them when they settled the Americas and that tradition still continues today as a favorite. Nearing the end of the 16th century, various toppings on toasted breads emerged. The popular toppings used were eggs, cheese, meat and at times rosewater.
The first idea of toast is attributed to the Egyptians about 6000 years ago. The sun’s heat, as they observed, can bake their bread, yet the parched desert air dehydrated and rendered the toast tasteless. As a result, they consider toasting as a way of preserving the bread. This concept was spread by the Romans throughout Europe. Eventually bread was toasted in wire frames in fireplaces until the invention of electricity came along, producing the first toasters in the early 1900′s.
Whenever I’m starving, the first thing I desire is toast. I just love crusty bread and real butter. We used to have them when we were kids. It was a real treat. My grandmother bakes her bread, formulates her own jelly and butter. The toasts were made of thick slices of bread baked until crispy and slathered with butter and a nice generous serving of jelly. It certainly was a treat.
There are several magnificent toasters in the market today, a few are built with an oven. You can find toasters that can accommodate four slices of bread at the same time. It seems that our toaster and toaster oven are the busiest of all kitchen appliances. We love to place sliced tomatoes on the baking sheet and put it in our toaster oven. We then put a pinch of salt and pepper, leaves of fresh basil, grated parmesan cheese and a drop of olive oil on top. We broil them until the cheese is nice and melted. In some cases, we love putting provolone cheese on bread with tomatoes, salt and pepper on top, bake it until crispy and chomp on it like an open-faced grilled cheese and tomato sandwich. The ideas for recipes are endless and these modern appliances make it fast and easy to prepare or add to a meal.
Toasts have branched out into songs, collectibles, bible, and also in the internet where your toast is streamlined with the daily weather forecast.
To me, my granny’s toast recipe is still what I’d like – thickly sliced, burnt to a crisp topped with real butter and muscadine jelly. No one can top that.
